British charity Alzheimer’s Research UK has launched The Lab, a virtual online laboratory and hospital for the families of those living with Alzheimer’s disease and related diseases. The new initiative showcases clinical research and treatments and the team behind it hopes it will demystify the clinical research process.

Visitors to The Lab have the opportunity to visit three main research areas.   The journey begins in a basic research laboratory featuring videos and slideshows about how research is funded and the value of clinical research. A second lab area offers further detail on research such as brain scans and blood tests. The final stage of the journey details the testing process for new treatments.

The Lab was developed to improve public understanding of how scientists go about their work.  Rebecca Wood, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said, “People tell us that they feel research takes place behind closed doors so we wanted to break down the barriers and help give the public a flavour of what our researchers are up to. The Lab addresses this in a way that means even those who struggle to leave the house can learn about the different kinds of research underway to tackle the devastating diseases that cause dementia”.

It is estimated that around 820,000 people in the UK are currently living with dementia, while over 40% of the population has a close friend or family member with the disease.
