Carers’ week – In sickness and in health

National Carers Week in June (recognises the contribution of millions of unpaid carers who devote their time and energy to supporting a family member or friend.

In the UK, 670,000 are carers of people with dementia.  With two thirds of dementia sufferers living at home, family carers are estimated to save the UK over £8 billion a year. If you also consider that only 43% of people living with dementia have received a diagnosis, the number of carers could easily be double official estimates.

Carers Week , delivered by a partnership of eight national charities (Age UK, Carers Trust, Carers UK, Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, MS Society and Parkinson’s UK), is asking carers how their  role impacts their health and wellbeing.

The report ‘In Sickness and in Health’  has revealed that 84% of carers never expected to be a carer, with 83% stating that caring has had a negative impact on their physical health and 87% on their mental health, leading to 39% putting off medical treatment because of their commitments.
